This is the story of Professor Nurul Islam’s life starting with early years in Chittagong and as a student successively in Calcutta, Dhaka and Harvard University in the USA. While a Professor at Dhaka University and Director at PIDE he played a prominent and active role in the struggle for economic justice for East Pakistan against the ruling establishment of Pakistan. He made significant contribution to the elaboration of the Six Points Programme which paved the way for independence. As the Deputy Chairmen of the first Bangladesh Planning Commission he was the pioneer in providing the institution and framework for economic policy making for the new state. At UN/FAO and IFPRI he dealt with the agricultural policy issues at the national and international levels. In retirement he has continued to provide a wide perspective on development issues in general as well as of Bangladesh. In this book the author records for the first time many hitherto unknown episodes and incidences bearing upon his long and chequered life which will be of considerable interest for the general reader as well as the researchers.
