শহীদ পরিবারের সন্তান লেখক রফিকুল ইসলাম । 1966 সনের 1 ফেব্রুয়ারি নেত্রকোণা জেলার দুর্গাপুরের নওয়াপাড়া গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন । শৈশবে 1971 সনের মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধে তাঁর একমাত্র চাচা শহীদ বুদ্ধিজীবী অধ্যাপক আরজ আলী বীরোচিতভাবে শহীদ হন, যিনি ছিলেন নিজ পরিবার এবং এলাকাবাসীর স্বপ্ন । অগ্নিসংযোগ ও লুটপাট হতে দেখেন তাদেঁর বাড়িঘর। তাঁর পারিবারিক এই ট্রাজেডি/বিয়োগ-ব্যাথা নিয়ে রচিত হতে দেখেন বাউলগান ও গীতিকবিতা। তখন থেকেই উপলব্ধি করতে শেখেন- মুক্তিযুদ্ধে খুবই মর্মন্তুদ ও বীরোচিত এক ঘটনা ঘটে গেছে তাদেঁর পরিবারে, যার উপলব্ধি ও মূল্যায়ন রয়েছে ময়মনসিংহ অঞ্চলের সর্বসাধারণের মধ্যে । তখন থেকেই প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ হন- বড় হয়ে তিনিও লিখবেন মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধভিত্তিক বস্তুনিষ্ঠ উপাখ্যান । যার ফলশ্রুতিতেই লেখকের এময়ের সৃষ্টি সাড়াজাগানো মুক্তিযুদ্ধের উপন্যাস 'একাত্তরের বিষাদ সিন্ধু&
