At the beginning of Tintin: The Blue Lotus, Tintin and Snowy are still enjoying their break in India, in the palace of the Maharajah of Gaipajama, where they ended up at the end of the previous adventure, Cigars of the Pharaoh.
Tintin receives a visitor from China who tells him he is needed in that country and mentions a Japanese name, Mitsuhirato. Before he can finish the message, he is poisoned by a dart dipped in the Rajaijah juice, the poison of madness.
Tintin and Snowy travel to China. They meet Mitsuhirato who tells them they are actually needed in India and tells them to go back. On board the ship bound for India, Tintin and Snowy are kidnapped and taken back to China. There, Tintin is informed that he was brought back by members of a secret society known as the Sons of the Dragon. The leader of the society, Wang Chen-Yee, tells him that Mitsuhirato lied to him, that he is a Japanese agent and also a drug smuggler. The society is trying to fight the evil of the Opium Trade and also resist Japanese interference in Chinese affairs.
Tintin decides to help them, especially as Didi, Mr. Wang’s son, who saved him many times from danger, has been poisoned by the Rajaijah juice and has gone mad. The scientist who was conducting research into an antidote for the poison has disappeared and Tintin also tries to track him down. Tintin soon gets involved in international political machinations as the Japanese try to strengthen their hold on China. He is held prisoner, his life is endangered many times, but he is helped all along by the members of the Sons of the Dragon society.
Tintin: The Blue Lotus was first published in 1936 and was adapted to a television series in 1991.
