আবুল কাশেম জন্ম ১৯৬০ সালে, বর্তমান চাঁপাইনবাবগঞ্জ জেলা শহরের নয়াগোলায়। মাধ্যমিক ও উচ্চমাধ্যমিকে ভালো ফল নিয়ে ভর্তি হন রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইতিহাস বিভাগে। সেখান থেকে প্রথম শ্রেণিতে প্রথম স্থান লাভ করে এমএ পাস করেন ১৯৮২ সালে। ১৯৯২ সালে পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন অধ্যাপক ড. অমলেন্দু দে-র অধীনে, ভারতের যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে।
বাংলাদেশ সিভিল সার্ভিসে (বিসিএস প্রশাসন) নিয়োজিত ছিলেন অল্প কিছু সময়ের জন্য (১৯৮৬)। সিভিল সার্ভিস ছেড়ে প্রভাষক হিসেবে যোগ দেন রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইতিহাস বিভাগে। বর্তমানে রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইতিহাস বিভাগের অধ্যাপক। ওই বিভাগের সভাপতি এবং একই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি হিসেবে দায়িত্বপালন করেছেন।
গবেষণার মূল ক্ষেত্র, বাংলাদেশের ছাত্র আন্দোলন ও বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাস। বঙ্গবন্ধু, মুক্তিযুদ্ধ ও বাংলাদেশ তাঁর পঠন-পাঠনের বিষয়।
