The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is based on the historical accounts of the betrayal and assassination of Julius Caesar by Marcus Brutus. The play begins with Brutus as he speaks with a group of conniving senators who believe Caesar wishes to transform the Roman Republic into a monarchy under his total control. This idea is seeded in their minds by the diabolical Caius Cassius, but Brutus isn’t convinced. Brutus begins to receive letters of public support, orchestrated by Cassius, and he soon becomes a part of their plan to overthrow Caesar. Caesar ignores the words of a soothsayer and one of his own supporters, meeting his death at the hands of those he trusts. Following his assassination, Rome erupts into chaos, and despite the oration of Brutus, the people are swayed by the words of Mark Antony who turns them against the conspiring Senate. This play has influenced many movies, novels and songs. It remains one of the most iconic plays of the Bard of Avon, and one of the most classic adaptations of Caesar’s last days in fiction.
