Soft, but audible murmurs of passages from the Quran, recited
by devout Muslims, mingle with smoke rising from oil lamps.
Ostrich eggs placed just above them are fixed to large cast
iron rings suspended from the ceiling. The evening is pleasant,
fanned by a gentle cooling breeze wafting in from the Bosporus.
There are no insects inside the Süleymaniye Mosque in
Istanbul despite the summer rain that has spawned so many
for their short but brilliant and frenetic lives - apparently the
Ostrich eggs, heated by the oil lamps beneath them emanate
a barely discernable odour that repels insects. The ventilation
of the Mosque has been cleverly designed by the architect and
builder of the mosque, Mimar Sinan, the greatest architect and
builder of his day. His Jewishness was no bar in his selection for
the task by Süleyman the Magnificent - the Sultan wanted the
best, regardless - a tribute to the progressiveness of the ruler
so woefully absent today. The air entering through the large
doors on either side of it is sucked out through a small window
at first floor height overlooking the interior of the mosque. It
carries with it the soot from the oil lamps, which then settles on
the walls of a small room. The soot is collected and made into
ink and that ink is used for the calligraphy to lovingly write out
beautifully illuminated copies of the Quran. These are on proud
display in the Topkapi Museum.
