Freedom is an American English novel. The book follows the life and times of several members of the Berglund family, including their friends and close relatives. Spread across many years of the last decade of the twentieth century, the book narrates and examines the often troubled relationships between the family members, their friends and lovers.
The Berglunds are a family that is considered to be the ideal example of the middle class. They are one of the first families to shift back to the urban life of St Paul, Minnesota after years of migration of white families to the suburban lifestyle. The Berglunds are headed by Walter, a lawyer and his wife Patty, a pretty homemaker who has a distinct, self - deprecating sense of humour. They have a daughter, Jessica and a son, Joey. Joey is highly independent, with a keen interest in money making. The book chronicles the life of this seemingly normal and ideal family. The first section of the book follows their lives in this urban neighborhood. As the book moves on, it develops into a sort of autobiography as narrated by Patty, which recollects her youth and her relationship with her parents. It story progresses to their present, when her marriage with Walter is slowly crumbling and tells of the recent incidents that have led to it. This edition of Freedom has been published in paperback by Fourth Estate in 2011.
