Stoner follows the life of William Stoner, who is a rugged farm boy from Missouri. His parents send him to college to major in agriculture, but a seminar on English literature blows him away and changes his life forever. He changes his major to literature and this was the first decision he made based upon his dreams and aspirations. Stoner becomes an English teacher, but is disheartened and devastated by the politics going on in the English Department. Although he is a prolific English professor, Stoner struggles to make his presence felt. He marries the wrong woman, who attempts to isolate him from the affections of their only child. His life is quiet and dull and none of his colleagues remember him after his death. Stoner is a narrative of the various conflicts, defeats and victories of the human race that pass unrecorded and uncovers the significance of an individual life.
