Introduction This book is a compilation of selected articles published in the 'Daily Sun'. The articles appear to have a general theme giving rise to the title of the book: Leader, Leadership and Politics in Bangladesh.
The book starts with hoisting a partial image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Perhaps I have not done anything better than the BBC World Service that depicted him as the Greatest Bangalee of all times. Next I have tried to project him as a unique personality and Champion of Bangla language movement. The other two articles contain a general sketch of Zillur Rahman and Abdur Razzak - who played significant role in liberation war and thereafter. All of them are part of the history. In the book, Sheikh Hasina appears as a living legend who has transformed herself from a politician to statesman.
The other articles generally describe leaders in the social or cultural settings such as in the liberation war or in the implementation of the spirit of the liberation war. One exception is perhaps 'A Visit to Buckingham Palace'. The queen is a leader by herself who lives there. The nature of politics in Bangladesh is partly reflected when politics has been defined as a concerted effort to grab a bigger slice of the cake namely the limited recourses. I am not to be blamed if I have unmasked dirty face of politics.
No effort has been mounted to define leadership or its determinants. Obviously, leading is the act of leaders - male, female, political, social or academic. But, preciously, this is a specific form of behaviour to influence the behaviour of others who drive themselves to the achievement of common goal willingly and enthusiastically. The leaders - political or otherwise, described in this book have presented this view of themselves.
I am not a politician but have deep connection with politics in the sense I have defined it. I am hardly capable of writing in English on such topics but I must thank Mr. Amir Hossain, the editor of 'Daily Sun' who inducted me to write in English on such topics which are beyond my academic or professional domain.
