The Origin of the Musalmans of Bengal, by Khan Bahadur Khondkar Fazli Rubbee, former Dewan of the Murshidabad Nizamat Government, was first published in Calcutta in 1895 by Thacker, Spink & Co. It is the English translation of his Persian work, Hakikate Musalman-i-Bengalah. Fazli Rubbee drew upon historical evidence to argue that many Bengal Muslims descended from Muslims who migrated from foreign lands at different periods. His views sparked debate in the contemporary press. The Moslem Chronicle supported his position in January 1895, while The Calcutta Review responded with a critical essay, "Critical Notes: The Origins of the Musulmans of Bengal," the following year.Written at the close of the 19th century, this book is more than an exploration of the origins of Bengal's Muslims. It stands as a vital document of the Muslim community's search for historical identity and its early intellectual engagement with colonial historiography.
